Things I Bet You Didn't Know about Forklifts

The humble forklift -- where would business and industry be today without it? Certainly, jobs in the factory, manufacturing plants, or warehouses would be incredibly difficult without them -- yet how much do you really know about forklifts? You might not know as much as you think!

For example, do you know about the different types of forklifts? Did you know that forklifts can be powered in a number of different ways? Some forklifts are powered by LP gas -- some are powered by diesel fuel -- some are powered by gasoline -- and some are powered by batteries. (By the way, forklift batteries must be recharged daily -- most types only give you about eight hours of operating time).

Here's another one: did you know that ANY ONE who uses a forklift in a work environment must be properly certified by their employer to do so? Yes, forklift certification is a US government requirement now -- and forklift training companies have sprung up all over the place, providing all sorts of interesting training materials; some forklift training companies actually hold training class right on the business premises, using company equipment.

Here's a third: did you know that forklift repair is a specialized skill? Did you know that there are companies in existence which are devoted exclusively to the repair of forklift units? These forklift repair companies will even come out to your warehouse or manufacturing facility to try and fix your unit on-site.

And what if they can't? What if they end up holding your forklift away to the shop? What will you do then? Well, get a rental unit, that's what. A rental unit? That's right -- and that's another thing I'll bet you didn't know -- you can actually rent forklifts, and not just if your regular unit breaks down. Here's a typical scenario: perhaps you are a business that receives a special shipment each month -- but only for a day or two -- perhaps it's necessary supplies or raw materials. Since it's only during those two days that you receive your shipment, you don't want to go to the expense of purchasing a forklift -- what will you do with it the rest of the month?

Instead, you can make arrangements with a forklift rental company to rent a good-quality forklift made by a reliable manufacturer. Forklift rental companies will allow you to rent Clark forklifts, or Caterpillar forklifts, or Yale forklifts -- any of the major brand names.

I guess after reading this very brief article, you'll have to agree with me that despite the fact that we rely on forklifts every working day of our lives, there is much that we can still learn about them. I hope I've inspired you to perhaps do a little more in-depth research and reading about the various types and models of forklifts, and the offerings of the major forklift manufacturers. There is much more that I could have said on this subject, believe it or not, so feel free to check out my website for more background on this subject if you like.
